Tacoma Thunderchief CB10 Acoustic Bass Natural 2001

Tacoma Thunderchief, natural finish, made in USA 2001. This is a pretty remarkable thing, I was super impressed. In the early 1990s, Korean piano makers Young Chang spent big money buying and tooling up a timber mill in Washington State, USA, and the mill manager talked the company boss into setting up a guitar factory close by: Tacoma was born. The guitars debuted at NAMM in 1997, and their cult-favourite acoustic bass, the Thunderchief, launched in 1999. It's all solid, very lightly braced, finished in super thin satin, sports an offset 'paisley' soundhole and an  innovative bolt-on neck. All those design elements had one primary aim: make that top resonate, and I'm pleased to report that it really, really does. This is the loudest acoustic bass I've ever played by some margin. The low-end response is also very impressive: it's round, fat and weight, with a very strong fundamental note. This easily keeps up with loud acoustic guitars like dreadnoughts and jumbos. To be honest, I'm generally not a fan of acoustic bass as a genre: they usually hard to play, too quiet, anemic in tone and pretty much useless unless you plug them in, and that kinda defeats the purpose. This one though: dang it, it really broke all my assumptions, it's very impressive indeed. All hail the Chief.
