Squier Japan Standard Stratocaster Lake Placid Blue 1987
Squier Standard Strat, made in Japan circa 1987, Lake Placid Blue. For the first few years, from 1982-8, Squier branded guitars were made in the same illustrious Fujigen Gakki factory as their Fender branded cousins, by the same luthiers using many of the same parts. The earliest examples from 1982-5 carry the blessed 'JV' or 'SQ' serial numbers and fetch eye-watering cash, but these E serial examples were the next horses out of the gate, made from 1985-8. There was models for the Japan market, the SST-30 and CST-30, but this Standard Stratocaster was the export model, sold to USA, Europe and Australia. Before hitting the shop wall, our friendly house tech did a full re-fret, so this is in amazing playing order. The neck is super tightly grained maple and a lux dark slab of rosewood, carved to a slim vintage C and playing fast and fresh. The flat-pole single coils dole out the punchy lows and glassy highs; it sounds very convincing. The blue finish has yellowed and mellowed a little over the decades to a cool oceanic shimmer, it's looking very classy.
