Fender Japan Telecaster TL72-55 Sunburst 1988
Fender '72 Tele, sunburst, made in Japan 1986-8. This has some attitude, it's cool. Back in the 80s, Fender Japan was making guitars out of the famous Fujigen Gakki factory, near Mt Fuji. The Japan distributors and bigger retailers could order variations on the standard catalog models, limited finishes etc, and they were stamped 'order made' in the neck pocket. This is one of those examples, and the unique point seems to be a sen ash body with a sunburst finish. By default at the time, these came in black, blonde or natural, so the three tone sunburst is a super nice way to show off the vibrant lines of the grain. The neck is a comfy slim C shape, carved from some very tight and tasty maple, and it feels fantastic in the hands. The pickups offer pretty contrasting sounds: the neck is very percussive with a walloping low end kick, while the bridge is much brighter and has a very pronounced midrange punch, great into a dirty amp. The middle position is great, a nice mix of the two, it's got a pleasing warmth and balance. These 80s-era Fender Japan guitars are always impressive in the hands, and this is no exception.
