Gibson SG Special Ferrari Red 1997
Gibson SG Special, Ferrari Red, made in USA 1997. What a cool finish! You see plenty of SGs in the standard Cherry, but this finish was only ever done in limited runs every now and again. It's a solid red, not so far from Fender's Fiesta Red, and topped with nitro that's showing a bunch of checking lines, natural yellowing and some standard play wear. It feels good in the hands: the neck is a slim 60s type shape, which is fast and agreeable, and at 2.9kg it's nice and light with a generous natural resonance. The tone is on the bright and snarly end of the SG spectrum: the neck pickup has a pleasing ping up top, and the bridge pickup packs plenty of growl and bite with a definite midrange kick. If you're after a super cool SG that's a great mix of classic and curly, this one rules.
